The family of his Froebel grandfather immigrated to Potter County, Pennsylvania from Triptis, in the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. The family originated in Arnstadt and for many years lived in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt with its seat at the Heidecksburg Castle in Rudolstadt.

The author has visited Thuringia many times most recently in 2013 with his mother. He has many fond memories of walking in the restored garden at Marienthal, where his ancestor, Friedrich Froebel, danced and sang and while training Kindergarten teachers.
